How To Get Caviar In Stardew Valley
While interacting with locals and farming are going to be taking up most of your time in Stardew Valley, there are also plenty of side activities you can do to enhance your relationships with those in your town and earn you some profit.
One of the best ways to make money is by producing artisan goods which are all acquired in their unique ways and sold for a decent sum of money, and caviar is one of the most profitable.
The good news is that, as long as you have a few hours in your game already, getting caviar isn’t too difficult as long as you know how to acquire it, and how to use it properly.
Here is a full breakdown of how to get caviar in Stardew Valley and the best way to use it.
What Do You Need To Get Caviar?
You will need two main tools to find caviar: a preserves jar and a sturgeon roe.
You might recognize the preserves jar as the tool needed to make jam and pickles. However, these two foods don’t require you to catch a sturgeon roe, which can often be more troublesome.
Sturgeons are semi-elusive fish, meaning they can be a little stubborn to catch as opposed to other fish. However, a few factors can raise the chances of one taking a nibble on your bait.
If you go fishing on a rainy summer’s day, for example, this is when the chances of catching a sturgeon will be at their highest. However, make sure not to go fishing after 7 pm as they won’t be swimming around at this time.
In terms of where to fish for the sturgeon, they are most prevalent in the Mountain Lake, which can be found near the entrance to the mines, where you can hope to find them in both the summer and winter.
You’re also going to need to make sure you have a fish pod so that you can raise the sturgeon. To make one, you’ll need to give Robin 5,000g, 200 Stones, 5 green algae, and 5 green seaweed.
How To Make caviar
Step 1) Build A Fish Pond
If you haven’t done it already, make sure to pay a visit to Robin in her carpenter shop, who will be able to build you a fish pond that measures 5 tiles by 5 and will take two days to build.
Step 2) Catch A Sturgeon
Sturgeons can only be found in Mountain Lake in the summer or winter before 7 pm.
While they can be a little tricky to find, as long as you throw your cast as far into the lake as possible, you’ll have the best chance of catching them.
If you’re still struggling to reel in a sturgeon, it can be worth using better lures or eating a dish that will increase your fishing skill.
There is another way you can acquire sturgeon, and it’s by visiting Krobus on a Wednesday.
There is a random chance of him offering one of ten different fish to the player, and one of these is the sturgeon, so while it is a bit of a gamble, it can be much easier if you’re finding it hard to catch the fish.
Step 3) Grow The Sturgeon
Now that you have your sturgeon take it to the fish pond and place it in so it can start producing roe.
When the sturgeon starts to request items, you will need to supply these so that the population can grow and the fish can continue reproducing and producing more roe.
These items are:
- 1 Sturgeon: 1 diamond
- 3 Sturgeon: 1 jar of jelly, 1 jar of pickles, 2 jars of maple syrup
- 5 Sturgeon: 3 omni geodes
- 7 Sturgeon: 1 nautilus shell
If you keep supplying these items to the sturgeon when they request them, they will keep producing the roe required to make caviar.
Step 4) Collect And Harvest The Roe
Collect all the roe that has been produced by the sturgeon. You’ll then need to place it in a preserves jar, where it will turn into caviar after four in-game days.
How Much Does Caviar Sell For?
The base price for selling caviar is 500g, making it one of the more expensive artisan goods.
This also makes it a great tool to generate a positive cash flow, especially if you make multiple caviar at once.
Do Any Villagers Love caviar?
While it may sell for a hefty profit and can help you remain financially stable when you might need to spend a lot on farming equipment or other necessary tools, caviar is usually best to keep simply for its monetary value since there are no villagers who love it, making it somewhat of a lackluster gift compared to some of the others.
Most villagers will only like caviar, while Vincent, Sebastian, and Jas hate it, so always avoid giving it to these three.
Can Any Other Fish Produce Caviar?
Sturgeon is the only fish that will produce caviar once you place it in a preserves jar.
If you place any other type of roe into the jar, it will become an aged roe that will sell for a little more than usual but still not as much as caviar.
Summary
The game doesn’t exactly tell you how to acquire caviar or where to catch a sturgeon to make it. However, once you know what ingredients you need and where to find the fish, it actually becomes very easy to make caviar which can also net you a high profit.
Remember only to use caviar as a monetary tool since it won’t be much use as a gift, and if you are struggling to catch any sturgeons in the Mountain Lake, head on to Krobus on a Wednesday, who might have the fish you’re looking for.
