How To Get Clay In Animal Crossing
Animal Crossing is an entertaining game that sees players set up home on their own island. As one of the residents on the island, it is down to players to build the island up.
Players are responsible for building homes, bridges, and so much more to make the island better.
To improve your island and progress through the game, you have to craft an enormous range of different things. This can only be done by harvesting different materials. One material you’ll need is clay.
Whilst clay can be quite easy to find, harvesting it can be tedious. If you’ve never done it before, you might not know how though. Today, we’re here to change that.
In this guide, we’ve detailed every way you can get clay in Animal Crossing. Make sure you keep reading if you need to learn how to find clay quickly.
Why Do We Need Clay In Animal Crossing?
Let’s start by looking at why we need to find clay in Animal Crossing. Clay isn’t one of the most important materials in the game but it does come in useful for a number of reasons. First of all, players need clay to craft a variety of different things.
Without clay, players can’t craft multiple items. We’ve listed the items you need clay to craft below!
- Pots
- Classic Pitchers
- Wave Breaker
- Water Pump
- Ocarina
- Palm-Tree Lamp
The second reason we need clay in Animal Crossing is to make money. The in-game currency in Animal Crossing is bells. The clay we find can be sold to Nook’s Cranny to make a profit. We’ll look at how you can do this shortly.
How To Find Clay In Animal Crossing
Now you know more about why clay is important in the game, we can show you the different ways you can get it. Generally speaking, there are three main methods you can use to get clay in Animal Crossing.
These methods are hitting rocks, traveling to another island, and trading with other players. These are by far the easiest and quickest ways to get clay in Animal Crossing, so these are the methods we’ll be looking at in more detail.
1. Hitting Rocks
The most common way players get clay in this game is by hitting rocks. Every rock on your island can be hit every day to reveal up to eight different materials. The materials you’ll find in rocks include:
- Stone
- Iron Nugget
- Gold Nugget
- Bells
- Clay
Admittedly, clay is one of the last things you normally want to fall out of a rock because it has the lowest value. However, if you need it for crafting, you’ll hope it falls out.
You aren’t guaranteed to find the material you need every time you hit a rock, so this method can be quite tedious, but there’s a good chance you’ll find at least one clay from each rock.
To make materials fall out of a rock, stand to one side and hit the rock with your axe or shovel. Every time you hit the rock, a new item will fall out. The rock will drop up to eight different items every day.
To hit the rock, equip your axe or shovel, press ‘A’ multiple times, and then press ‘Y’ to add the items to your inventory.
2. Visit Another Island
Once you’ve collected all the clay from the rocks on your island, you’ll have to wait until the next day to hit them again. If you need more clay now though, you could always head to another island.
To find more rocks, you can use your Nook Miles to fly to a Nook Miles Island. Nook Miles Islands are smaller, unique islands that are covered in different resources that you can exploit.
Luckily for you, this includes rocks. All you have to do when you visit a Nook Miles Island is hit the rocks as you did on your own island. Follow the steps below to visit another island.
1. Buy a Nook Miles Ticket from the machine at Resident Services for 2,000 Nook Miles.
2. Take your Nook Miles Ticket to the airport.
3. Tell Orville ‘I want to fly’ and use your Nook Miles Ticket.
3. Trade With Other Players
The final method we have for you is to trade with another player. If you have a friend or partner that plays Animal Crossing too, you can easily visit each other’s islands and swap materials.
Whilst there is no way to do this directly, simply dropping your materials on the floor and picking up what the other player dropped is an easy way to get clay quickly.
To trade with another player, one of you must first open the gates at your airport. You can do this by talking to Orville, who will create a Dodo code. This unique code will let your friend visit.
All you have to do then is head to an open piece of land with your friend and drop off the items you wish to trade. Remember that you can’t drop fish or bugs.
Selling Clay In Animal Crossing
If you don’t need to use the clay you find, we recommend stockpiling as much as you can before then selling it to Nook’s Cranny. Whilst the average price of clay is quite low, it isn’t uncommon for clay to be listed on the store’s Hot Item List.
Items on the Hot Item List can be sold for double their usual amount. More often than not, the Hot Item List will call for an item made out of clay. When the store does seek an item made from clay, simply craft the item and sell it.
Final Thoughts
Clay might be one of the more tedious materials to collect in Animal Crossing but it can come in handy when it comes to trading with other players and crafting a range of different items.
In this guide, we’ve shown you the best ways to get clay in the game quickly. No matter what you need clay for and how much you need, you can’t go wrong using the methods we’ve looked at.
All you have to do now is grab your shovel, hit some rocks, and collect as much clay as you can. Alternatively, make your life easier by trading with your friends.
